This is an assortment of Kelp Gull (Larus dominicanus) photos. The first two are of the Maryland bird, taken on March 4, 1999.
The next two were taken in October, 1998 in South Africa (L. d. vetula). The last 4 photos were taken in November, 1996, at various locations in South America and Antarctica. I have a few flight shots as well, some day I'll get them scanned and posted.
There are a number of differences between the two races. From my observations, it seems that the South African race has duller green legs, a narrower tertial crescent and trailing edge, a smaller darker eye, and a less bulbous bill. These differences were confirmed in conversations with Ian Sinclair. Based on these features, it seems to me that the Maryland bird is most likely of the nominate race. Now, what race are the Louisiana birds?
